Hi there Snap Ginger readers! My name is Anne and I am the blogger behind Love the Here and Now. My blog is full of everything that I am currently a fan of; hence the name! I love to read, sometimes bake, and share my thoughts on life. My favorite thing to blog about though? Blogging! I am constantly learning new things and I love to share them with my readers. So today, I thought I would share with you some of the common blogging pitfalls that I have seen and how you can avoid them

Proofread

I can’t tell you how many times I have come across a blog post and found spelling errors or grammatical errors. Nobody is perfect, myself included as I have fallen victim to this pitfall too. Spellchecking can only go so far. Your spelling of “their” may be correct but you meant “there”. Reading over your posts several times is always a good idea!

Preview

I highly, highly recommend proofreading your post in preview mode. Preview mode allows you to see your post as your readers will. I have caught more spacing issues as well as other aesthetic issues this way that wouldn’t have shown up in the posting section of my blogging platform.

Fonts/Colors

I get it. There are so many beautiful fonts out there. Heck, I have a monthly series dedicated to my love of fonts. Moderation is key. The text of your blog post should be easy to read and dark enough that your readers do not have to squint to see it. When creating graphics, try to stick with 2 (or a maximum of 3) fonts. Play around with various fonts and decide what 2 fonts coordinate. This is a great way to let your creativity shine.

The same thing goes for colors. You may love that bright color but will it be a turn off for your readers? Try using that bright color as an accent in your graphics or as accents in your blog design. You don’t want to stifle your own personality but at the same time, you want your blog to be something that a majority of people can relate to and find welcoming.

Comments

I am fully aware of the fact that bigger bloggers get tons of comments, thus making this pitfall a bit harder to avoid. My thoughts? If someone takes the time to comment, I will take the time to reply. It may not be that same day but I will reply within 4 days. I want my readers to know that I value their thoughts and opinions. I love the conversations and relationships that comments start. Through commenting we have the ability to build on community; something that I find vital in the blogging world.

Make it Easy for Your Posts to Be Shared

Do you have share buttons available for your readers? Do you have a pin it button available for your blog? If you don’t, you are missing out! You wrote a great post, your readers want to share it…make it easy for them to do so.

Link Ups

Link ups are a great way to share your work and to find new blogs to follow. It’s wonderful exposure for everyone. Many link ups have rules. Be sure to follow the rules. I have hosted a few link ups where bloggers have not paid attention to the instructions and have spammed my link up with multiple posts that do not fit the criteria of the link up. I allow it to happen once or twice but after that I will email the blogger. I’ll respectfully ask them to join me in the link up but to do so within the guidelines. We all want to get our blogs out there, but please do not abuse a link up.

Pop Ups

This may be an unpopular opinion, but there is nothing that bothers me more, or is more of a turn off to me, than a pop up box. If you are going to have them, please give me the courtesy of being on your site for more than 3 seconds before you have it pop up. How am I supposed to know if I want to sign up for your newsletter within seconds of landing on your blog? I need to read your post first. Give me 15 seconds before you ask me to do something please.

Using pop up boxes on your blog? Consider giving your readers some time before it pops up. Rarely does anyone know that they want to sign up for your newsletter within 2 seconds of reading a new blog!

Be Yourself

Authenticity and genuineness go a long way in the blogging world. We each bring something unique to the table, whether it is our experiences, our views, or our humor. You are your greatest asset. Use yourself wisely and let you shine.

There are thousands of blogs and bloggers out there but only one of you. Be yourself!

What blogging pitfalls have you found in your blogging journey? How did you avoid them?

I’d love for you to stop by and visit me! Thanks for allowing me to take over your blog today Jamie!
