Red, White and Blue Smoothie

We’re coming upon one of my favorite summer holiday weekends: 4th of July! I love to be outside, soaking up the sun and eating the fresh summer fruits that are everywhere this time of year! I also love love love to have a fresh summer smoothie for breakfast or lunch this time of year. As if reading my mind, CVS reached out to me to introduce me to the new CVS Brand nutrition products that recently hit store shelves. CVS is absolutely one of my favorite stores, so I was really excited to collaborate with them!

They sent over 3 items:

·         Vegan Protein Smoothie packets in mixed berry, chocolate, and vanilla

·         Organic black chia seeds

·         Coconut oil

These products can be used on their own, or to create delicious and healthy smoothies to power you after a workout, or help you through the afternoon slump! I’ve been a fan of coconut oil for as long as I can remember now, and I’ve made several smoothies with chia seeds before, so I was super excited to try these products from CVS!
Plus, all CVS Brand products are high-quality and comparable to national brands at a lower cost. They all come with a 100% money-back guarantee – so if it’s not for you, you can return it to any CVS, no questions asked. Who doesn’t love that?!

I just had to make a smoothie, and figured that red, white and blue would fit the theme of this weekend perfectly! The red component is the strawberries, the blue the blueberries and the white the coconut oil! Yumm!! AND this smoothie will give you a nice energy boost and keep you fuller longer with the spinach and chia seeds! Here’s how I made it!

Red, White and Blue Smoothie

1/2 cup coconut milk
juice of 1 grapefruit
1/4 cup fresh blueberries
1/4 cup frozen banana
1/3 cup frozen strawberries
1-2 hand fulls fresh spinach
1 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp chia seeds
ice cubes as needed

1. Add all ingredients to the blender. Start with your lowest setting (my blender has 3 settings) and blend until a nice cyclone begins to form. Move up to your middle setting and then highest setting. You may need to add more almond milk depending on how the protein packet is incorporating.
2. Blend for 2-3 minutes until smooth.
3. If your smoothie stops cycloning, stop blending, let the smoothie “burp,” and begin again with the lowest setting.

*SnapTip: Pack up leftover spinach and freeze for future smoothies!

Organize in a Cinch with Labels!

Hello SnapGinger readers, I have a great DIY for you today! HD Chalks reached out to me to see what I could come up with for their Black chalkboard Labels with Liquid Chalk Marker.  I love to organize, and I am all about a simple all-in-one solution. The kit comes with 52 labels and a marker, so you can really organize to your hearts content!

Labels are one of the best solutions to reorganize a space, while labeling everything in sight in a stylish way! The uses are endless, and the labels stick to glass, plastic, paper and more! They’re self-adhesive, reusable, durable and waterproof, that means the bathroom can finally get the attention it deserves!

PLUS, and this is my favorite part, you can wipe them clean with a damp cloth, in case you change your mind about what you’re storing where! The marker is non-toxic and there is a 100% guarantee. It’s almost too good to be true right? Plus, the price is right. So let’s talk about some great Pinspiration for using these amazing labels!

I see so many practical and fun label applications on Pinterest every day, but here are some of my favorites!

The labels above are printable, but, who needs a printer when you have a handy chalk marker! You can label your entire pantry with this kit, and then some. And then, when you decide to switch from flour to whole wheat flour, simply wipe that label down and change it up! Easy Peasy!

I love the idea of using the labels on tags tied to baskets. You can definitely do this in the bathroom, giving each family member their own basket. Plus, how cute is that first aid bucket?! We have currently have a plastic bin, but I’m seriously thinking of upgrading! Either way, labels will be the star of the show!

Have an extra piece of chalk laying around? Why not use the technique above and elevate your labels?! These make great gift tags, and would be great for teacher gifts!!

These jars are darling, and they look even better with chalk labels. Plus, not to be a broken record, you can change up your labels as your spice collection expands and morphs!

This might be my favorite application for chalk labels: labeling your homemade gifts! I’ve posted a few tutorials, linked below, for homemade gifts I’ve made, and I wish I had these labels for the scrubs I packaged up, they would have been adorable on the tags, or even right on the containers themselves! I never even thought of it!

Why not wrap up some homemade soap with plastic and seal it with a label? Or package a few bars in a cute box and label that sucker for a professional looking homemade gift!

Also, I wrote a post containing some DIY home cleaning recipes. I included some free printable labels, all of which I’ve printed out to use in my own home! Another option would be to use these labels on your homemade cleaning products! How brilliant?!

I hope I was able to inspire you to expand your label horizons! If you’re interested, you can pick up the label kit on Amazon, my affiliate link is below!

Will you be trying these amazing labels?!

My Movie Theater Faves

We just recently went to the movies to see the new Jurassic World movie, and it reminded me again how much I love going to the movies! We’e lucky enough to have an updated theater in our town, with really nice screens and leather reclining seats! Awesome! It’s an AMC theater, which is great, because the AMC Stubs Loyalty Program is my favorite! You get $10 back for every $100 you spend! If you haven’t been to the movies lately, you should know that’s only about 2 trips to the movies for tickets and snacks, and then you’ve got $10 back, so it’s a good deal in my book.

Speaking of snacks, here are a few of my fave snacks to get at the movies!

Yummmmmm! I’ll let you in on a little secret though: I picked all those treats up at my local drug store! AND, more often than not, our movie nights happen right in our own living room!

I pick up my favorite candy, load up the popcorn machine and we select a movie. More often than note we end up renting a movie or watching one for free from Amazon! How you ask? Well, we are Prime members and, with that, come some perks!

Here’s more about them right from Amazon!

Our membership program offers special benefits for just $99 per year:
*Unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows
*FREE Two-Day Shipping on millions of items
*Unlimited, ad-free streaming of over a million songs and more Prime benefits

So, what do you think? Go out to the movies or stay in with Amazon?!

Be a Better Bridesmaid with 3 DIYs You Can Handle!

Welcome to the latest installment of my Be a Better Bridesmaid Series! Today we’re talking DIYs that any Bridesmaid can tackle. Doing one, or all, of these will for sure turn you into Super Bridesmaid! Whether your Bride-to-Be needs some decor inspiration, or you would like to do something special for her, I’ve got some ideas for you! These DIYs are easy, and require very few items to make.

I’ve included lots of photos, tips, tricks and important steps to keep in mind when getting your craft on! Without further ado, here are my fave 3 DIYs!

Decorative Wine Bottles

This is a really fun DIY! Mainly because, it requires you to collect wine bottles- and who doesn’t love an excuse to drink more wine?! The supplies for these are easy to get and inexpensive: wine bottles, washed, dried, labels removed, spray paint, mod podge and glitter. Check out my steps below!

I worked with the Maid of Honor on these bottles, and we ended up using them for the Bridal Shower. The Bride loved them so much, she used them at the wedding on all the cocktail tables! Talk about bang for your buck! I used the spray paint on all of my bottles, using painters tape to make different patterns on the bottles. The MOH used the mod podge and glitter, in addition to some spray paint, to create the patterns on her bottles. We both followed the same basic steps, illustrated and explained below!

I collected wine, beer and champagne bottles of all colors and sizes. If you’re planning on taping off sections to create stripes, then you’ll want to work with clear or frosted white wine bottles. If you have darker red wine or beer bottles, those can be covered completely in the spray paint and mod podge. We opted for gold, to go with the Bride’s color scheme, and it’s a really versatile color! The spray paint I linked above is gorgeous, and looked amazing after one coat. I sprayed outside in my garage, making sure the area was well ventilated. I put the bottles inside old cardboard boxes to catch the excess spray, and rotated them to cover all sides. Make sure you take a step back when spraying, and make quick, light strokes. Loading up on the spray paint will cause drips! Remove the painters tape when you’re done to expose the patterns!

When removing the labels from your bottles, leave yourself plenty of time. I worked in stages and let my bottles soak overnight. I filled them with warm soapy water and set them upright in a bucket with 4-5 of their friends, and then filled the bucket with hot soapy water. After they soaked the labels peeled off pretty easily. I used a scour sponge to remove some of the glue, and some Goo Gone on the remainder. This is the longest part of the entire process!

Instagram Photo Book

An Instagram photo book makes a nice keepsake, and is something wonderful to DIY for your Bride! I picked up a Messy Book, in a not-too-bridal black and white stripe pattern, and some additional inserts and used a little creativity for this one!

There are quite a few sites now that allow you to print out your pics from Instagram, or from your files, in the 3″x3″ size. These work perfectly in this album. You can also display these photos at a shower or wedding, in a frame or strung up on some ribbon (mini clothespins anyone).

To add an extra special touch, I cut up some neon index cards into 3″x3″ size, using my trusty paper trimmer, linked below, and put them in some of the slots in the album. Not only do these add a pop of color, but the lined sides give your Bride somewhere to record special memories!

This is one DIY keepsake that any Bride is sure to treasure!

DIY Escort Cards

For the escort cards, using the right products is key. You will need some high quality glitter paper, a paper cutter and some printable labels. Make sure to buy whatever labels work best with your type of printer (ink jet vs. laser jet). If the Bride has a particular wedding font in mind, download it to keep everything consistent. Often times you can get it for free! Below are links to all of the products I used for the labels, please note, these are affiliate links. I was able to make enough cards for a 170 guest wedding with 1 of each of these items!

Here is an illustrated guide to how I created the labels, keep scrolling for the steps!

As you can see, the paper is super glittery! But, it’s not glitter paper, in the sense that, the glitter does not come off! It’s almost like it was coated with a layer of mod podge to keep all that glitter where it’s supposed to be, on the paper, not on guest’s hands! Awesome stuff!

Since the paper is 12″x12″, I decided to maximize the sizing and cut 3″x6″ cards. When folded over and tented, these make 3″x3″ escort cards (noticing a trend here?!). I used the ruler on the paper cutter to measure my cuts and went to town! For the names, I went with circular labels to make them really different, and found the Avery ones in a 2.5″ circle, which left just enough of the gold glitter showing, while leaving me plenty of room to display names and table numbers. I downloaded a template and used my mail merge wizard in Word to transform the Bride’s table number spreadsheet into these amazing labels!

In order to make a crisp fold on the cards, I smoothed over the fold with the broad end of a butter knife. I then placed the labels on the cards, trying my best to center the labels, and stacked the cards alphabetically. I weighed down the cards to maintain the fold, but also make sure the adhesive wasn’t lifting prior to the big day! Here is the finished product (with a little editing so I didn’t expose any guests names on the interwebs!)

Each of these DIYs was super easy, fun to do, and made for maximum inpact. Next time you ask the Bride if she needs help and she says “No,” why not suggest an awesome DIY that you can make for her?!

3 Fresh CSA Recipes

I’ve already filled you in as to why I joined a CSA. Maybe I encouraged you to also, or maybe I inspired you to eat more veggies this summer. Either way, you’re going to need some delicious veggie recipes to get you through it! Here are my favorites that I’ve discovered so far!

We have gotten beets quite a few times now in our CSA, and I never knew I loved them! So much so, that I’ve actually gone to the store to get them at other times throughout the week! They are delicious as a side dish, roasted to perfection, but they do take a long time to cook, and are a bit messy. I make quite a few beets at once, peel them, and store them in a Ziploc so they’re ready throughout the week for other recipes, like this one!

Quinoa and Turkey Salad with Beets

2 boxes of your favorite quinoa
1 package turkey breast strips, cut into 1 in cubes
3 roasted beets, cubed
2 avocados, cubed
1 jalapeno pepper, diced
2 oranges, peeled and segmented, reserve the juice
2 cloves garlic, diced
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Juice of one lemon
Juice of one lime
1/2 to 1 cup chicken broth
1 tablespoon olive oil, plus 1 tablespoon for cooking turkey
1 tables spoon honey
salt and pepper to taste

1. Cook quinoa according to package directions. As that is cooking, heat a large pan over medium heat.
2. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to the pan, followed by the garlic. After about a minute, add the turkey cubes to the pan and season with paprika, salt and pepper. Cook 8-10 minutes or until done.
3. As the turkey is finishing, add in chicken broth and deglaze the pan. Let it cook down for a few minutes, and add some flour to thicken if necessary.
4. Add beets, avocados, jalapeno, and orange segments to a large bowl. Add orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, honey, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and salt and pepper and stir to coat. I added a sprinkle of paprika and some cayenne in here also, just to amp the heat and keep the flavoring consistent, this is optional.
5. Add the quinoa to the large bowl, remove the turkey cubes and broth from the heat and add to the large bowl and stir gently to combine everything together.

I have to admit, I’ve only ever added kale to smoothies, and (unsuccessfully) made kale chips. I know it’s all the rage, but I just didn’t think we liked it! Until I tried a simple recipe, that was delicious!

Sauteed Kale and Mushrooms

1 large bunch of kale, leaves removed from the stems
1 package of mushrooms, your favorite, sliced
1-2 cups of chicken broth
1 tablespoon butter

2 cloves garlic, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon thyme (fresh if you have it! our CSA sent us a plant!)
salt and pepper to taste

1. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to the pan, followed by the garlic. After about a minute, add the mushrooms to the pan and season with thyme, salt and pepper.
Cook 5-7 minutes or until almost done.
2. Add in kale leaves, and chicken broth, stir and cook covered until the leaves begin to wilt.
3. Add in the butter and more salt and pepper, stir to coat. Cook uncovered for 4-5 minutes.
4. Once the kale is wilted, and the broth has cooked down, you’re ready to serve this awesome side dish! We love this tossed in with rice also and add grilled or sauteed chicken for a heartier meal!

No matter what time of year, we love love love asparagus in our house! Did you know they’re also a great detox food?! love!

Roasted Asparagus with Tomatoes

1 large bunch of asparagus, trimmed of the tough ends
1 jar of roma tomatoes in their juice, bonus points if you canned your own!
1 tablespoon butter

2 cloves garlic, diced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon thyme
salt and pepper to taste

1. Preheat the oven to 375. Prepare a baking dish by coating the bottom with 1 tablespoon olive oil, followed by the garlic. Add the asparagus in a single layer, and top with the tomatoes and some of their juice and season with thyme, salt and pepper.
  Toss everything to coat.
2. Add in the butter and more salt and pepper, Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes, or until the asparagus is done.
3. You can also cook up this dish on the stove in a covered pan, and it will take a little less time!

What are some of your favorite recipes for seasonal veggies?!

The Best Strategy for Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes

I have been obsessing over makeup lately! Well, I should rephrase, I have been re-obsessing over makeup lately! I used to be totally into makeup, different techniques, applications, fun eye looks, but I lost that over the last few years. Reason being, my eyes used to tear CONSTANTLY! I’m talking just a constant dripping, huge fat tears welling up and dripping down my face. As you can imagine, watching all my pretty makeup and hard work drop right down my face too was no fun. So I went more basic, and something that could be touched up 42,000 times a day!

When I went to the doctor recently and was diagnosed with dry eye (I know, but I was tearing?!) and given drops to counteract this, it was like I was magically cured. All this time dealing with annoying tearing and I could have been using over-the-counter eye drops to help myself! It was magical, but I was also mildly annoyed that no other eye doctor was able to diagnose me, it really does pay to have the right doctors! Anyway, back to makeup, now I am totally back into makeup and all of its wonders, and I’ve grown my collection of brushes! I have had some for a few years now, and have been able to keep them in tip-top shape by properly cleaning, drying and storing them! I will tell you how I do it, so check out my strategy for cleaning your makeup brushes!

Now you may be thinking that strategy is a strong word, but, trust me on this one, when you’re trying to clean all of your brushes at once, you need to be prepared. No one has time to wash brushes for hours, but if you’ve got 10 minutes, you’re good to go! Less if you have less brushes! (I can’t be the only woman in the world to have this many brushes right?!)

First, you will want to gather all your brushes, and sort them into large brushes, usually face and body, medium brushes, for more precise application, and small brushes. The small brushes will be your shadow, crease, blending and lining brushes. Throw your eyebrow brush and spoolie, tweezer and lip brushes into this category also.

Second, gather your cleansing and drying materials. I lay out my towels on a flat surface so I can lay the clean brushes to dry. Never stand them upright to dry, as the water can seep down into the handle and eventually wear away the glue holding your brush together. I like to use a combination of a liquid and a solid cleanser, as well as a silicone brush scrubber. If you’re cleaning items like a tweezer and eyelash curler, have some alcohol and a cotton pad on hand too to wipe those items down. Here are the cleansers and tools I swear by!

I work in stages, large than medium and last small brushes, and set up an assembly line. I set up my cleansers by my sink, and get my brushes and scrubber ready. Here are my cleansing steps:

  1. Starting with the large brushes, wet each brush head thoroughly under your faucet and then squirt some liquid cleanser onto the head.
  2. Massage the brush gently with your fingers to get off the majority of the color.
  3. Swirl the brush into the solid cleanser, working up a nice lather, then swirl it on the brush scrubber to really remove any dirt, oil and makeup from the brush.
  4. Run the brush under water to rinse. If the water isn’t running clear from your brush head, apply a bit more liquid cleanser and swirl again. The brush should return to it’s original color and water should run clear under it.
  5. Repeat these steps for the medium and small brushes, this time taking 2-4 brushes in your hand at once for all of the cleansing and swirling. Also, don’t forget to clean off any beautyblender or makeup sponges that you have using this same method, minus the scrubber, since the sponges are a but more delicate!
  6. Rinse off your tweezers, eyelash curler and any other non-brush tools that you use with a bit of soap and wipe them down with a cotton pad doused with alcohol.
  7. Once dry, store your brushes upright in jars or cups, think outside the box, you can find a lot of options at the dollar store!

There you have it! My strategy for cleaning your brushes! If you didn’t want to splurge on the beautyblender brand cleansers, you can use a combination shampoo and conditioner, or an antibacterial soap. I have used these items in the past, I just really like the beautyblender brand, and the sizes I liked above last a realllllly long time!

Do you love makeup as much as I do? Do you have this many brushes or am I a looney person?!

Bikini season is upon us! As is shorts season, skirts season, bare midriff season (if you partake in that sorta thing) and in general no sweats season. My point is, a girl wants to look her best for all this body baring. Diet and exercise are awesome, as is chugging lots of water and cutting out dairy, sugar and fats. But sometimes you need an extra boost. This is where Skinny Teatox comes in. Skinny Teatox helps with weight loss, and promotes good health. It is all natural, and an easy addition to your everyday healthy routine.

When Skinny Teatox approached me for a collaboration, I couldn’t wait to try it! I have never been a fan of traditional juice cleanses (hanger issues) but am always looking for a healthy detox option. They sent me over their 14 Day Skinny Teatox which comes with the morning tea (which comes loose in a resealable bag). This tea increases metabolism and helps burn more fat during the day, and also gives you an energy boost. The evening tea (which comes bagged) is a cleanse which detoxifies your body. It contains the Alexandrian Senna leaf, which is used in herbal and modern medicine for it’s high levels of sennocides (read: laxative).

I got my tea cup ready, filled up the adorable strawberry tea filter, and got my honey on board for 14 days of really healthy eating. Here are my results:

Starting weight: 115 lbs
Ending weight: 112 lbs

The 14 Day Skinny Teatox was really easy to incorporate into my day to day, and it helped me to lose pounds! The morning tea curbed my hunger throughout the day, and gave me a boost of energy- my 3pm slump was a thing of the past. I even had a momentary panic thinking about how I would live without the tea after the detox was over! The evening tea was a gentle laxative, meaning it didn’t have me rushing to the bathroom first thing in the morning in pain, but it really did work!

I am not going to say the teatox is a miracle product, and I ate cheeseburgers and milkshakes on the couch and lost weight. I ate healthier over those 2 weeks (which is sorta the point of a detox anyway) and amped up my exercise regimen. In the interest of full disclosure, here is a summary of my daily routine for those 2 weeks, including diet and exercise and Skinny Teatox regimen.

Each Morning: I had one cup of Skinny Teatox in the am, along with an organic Greek yogurt for breakfast. Sometimes I had cottage cheese with fruit, or a smoothie. I go to a morning yoga class once a week as well.

Each Afternoon: I usually pack my lunch, and try to eat up our leftovers. Some ideas of what I bring for lunch are: grilled chicken and veggie kabob, watermelon salad, grilled salmon and veggies. I go to an afternoon yoga class on Saturdays, and try to get a run and/or weight training in 2 days a week.

Each Evening: I cook as healthily as I can, without getting too boring 😉 My honey and I are currently “off dairy,” so it’s actually easier to make healthier dishes without all of that cheese! A few dishes I like to make are a chicken, quinoa, and broccoli bake, grilled fish and veggies, grilled chicken with whole grain rice, whole grain pasta with canned tomatoes from our garden and frehsh basil. We love dessert, but I kept it healthy during the cleanse by having fresh strawberries and watermelon for dessert. Every other evening I would drink one cup of Skinny Teatox in pm.

Don’t just take my word for it, find out more about the product from the Skinny Teatox site:

1 Year Bloggiversary!!

So, it’s been one year for me in the blogosphere. When I started SnapGinger a year ago today, I had no idea what I was in for. Blogging has been more fun, more challenging, more exciting, more exhausting and more time consuming than I ever imagined it would be.

Even if I stopped now, which I wouldn’t because I love it so, I don’t think I would be able to not think like a blogger. Every time I start to craft, or start cooking using a recipe I’ve made up in my head, or try something new with my makeup, my mind automatically goes through 3 flashes: “oooo I should be taking pics of this!”; “oooo I wonder if anyone has posted about this before”; and “I should really be writing this all down!”

Blogging has become a part of me, of my every day life! I use it as my creative outlet (I used to scrapbook a LOT, now I digitally scrapbook) and I’ve made some great friends along the way. I’ve discovered some new and awesome products I never might have tried, and figured out ways to make our home more natural. We eat better now because I’m constantly striving to try new recipes and getting inspired by other great blogs out there!

Blogging is amazing and wonderful, and I recommend it to anyone who is inspired, and organized, and needs a new hobby! (or, let’s face it, a part time job!)

I love you guys, and thank you for reading, commenting and supporting and inspiring me on a daily basis! I couldn’t do it without the support from you and from my friends and family. And, of course, Roxy.

I hope you’ve enjoyed SnapGinger as much as I have over the last year! Here’s to many many more!!
