Happy Birthday Roxy from Martha Stewart Pets

Roxy turns 3 today, and what better way to celebrate than with a treasure trove of goodies from Martha Stewart Pets from PetSmart?! The kind folks at MS sent over some amazing gifts for my little girlie on her special day, and you will love how cute they are! Here’s Roxy’s Martha Stewart Pets from PetSmart photo shoot, and links to all the fun products she received!

First up is my favorite, and Roxy’s too, her new Kiss me it’s my Birthday shirt! I mean, how darling is that?! Is this one just the cutest model you’ve ever seen?!

So slimming! 😉

Next up is her new piggy! It’s a teether with a squeeker and she clearly enjoyed it! She also promptly ripped it apart because that is what Roxy does! Roxy, destroyer of all toys!

NOM NOM NOM {I must rip you apart}

It really is such a cute toy though, and makes me want to try this giraffe blanket toy also, because I think she’d really get a kick out of it!

How freaking good of a girlie is she when she sits so pretty?! Especially in her new collar! It’s the Botanical Adjustable collar and it is perfect for any special occasion, like her birthday, or my dad’s birthday (because I totally dressed her up for the day and he loved it)! hahaha

Lastly, the team at Martha Stewart Pets from PetSmart sent over Happy Birthday Hair bows, which Ms Diva Roxy was just not feeling. I couldn’t keep them on long enough for a pic, she was very scared of them! haha It must be those huge ears! They are really adorable though, and I’m sure other non-rabbit eared dogs would leave them on for more than 10 seconds!

Overall the entire line from Martha Stewart Pets from PetSmart is great for celebrations, big and small, they even have a wedding section! I mean, this collar and leash combo?! So perfect!!

The products are great quality, reasonably priced and so darn adorable! Let me know if you pick up anything from the line for your beloved canine!

Packing SPack for a Girls Getaway

What is SPack you say? Well, I would love to tell you all about this great little product! I stumbled upon SPack a few months ago on one of my favorite Bridesmaid research sites, The Bach, and I thought they would be adorable for a Bachelorette Party Survival Kit! I of course pinned their site, and when SPack reached out to me for a collaboration, I was beyond excited and jumped at the chance to review these mini wonders!

An SPack is a small plastic pouch filled with everything you might need for a night out, a trip to the gym, an outdoor adventure or a weekend getaway. In each SPack you’ll find 2 deodorant wipes, 1 face wipe, 1 hair tie, a mini toothbrush and toothpaste. Everything right?! How many times have you gone somewhere and forgotten toothpaste?! Or have been in need of a makeup wipe to remove stubborn eye makeup?! I’ve been in too many hotels with the roughest tissues ever, and settled for day 2 mascara and liner- no bueno. And no more! Not with SPack in your bag!

See what I mean>! The packs are perfectly purse-sized and will have you ready for anything! You can buy a single use pack (boring) or in packs of 4 or 24. How perfect for a Girls Getaway! The pricing on the 24 pack means you’re getting each little goodie bag for $3.75! AND they’re cute enough to be favors for any sleepover party! Inexpensive and ever-so-useful!

I received a 4 pack from SPack and the package itself would fit perfectly into any carry-on. You can be just like Santa and hand them out to your girlfriends upon arrival at your destination. Or, if you’re having the ladies over to your place, have the SPacks ready and waiting for each guest. Place an SPack on top of guest towels with a wrapped soap (“acquired” from various hotels) and  your guests will feel right at home!

I took two SPacks and included them in a Bridal Shower gift, along with a mini manicure kit, an assortment of nail polishes and a purse sized hand cream variety pack. This Bride-to-Be will be ready to go for any activity, especially her Wedding Day!

I packed up another with a great cosmetic kit from Bare Minerals, and a few other beauty products for a knock out birthday gift!

The last one I tossed in my gym bag so I can freshen up before or after any workout. If you’re going to the gym straight from work, you can use the makeup remover wipe to cleanse, and the hair tie to tame your tresses. Need to run a few errands after the gym? Brush your teeth, swipe on a deodorant wipe and you’re fresh and ready!

The possibilities are endless for this tiny little packet! Already opened your SPack but want to save the toothbrush and toothpaste? Grab a tiny snacker Ziploc baggie and stash your items in any purse for a quick cleanse at the office or on the go. If you’re like me, you’ve been at a sporting event or concert and just felt really gross after hot dogs and beer, this is where the SPack would come in handy!

I hope I’ve inspired you to pick up an SPack (or 4) for your next Girls Getaway. You can shop their site here!

Gardening 101: Canning Tomatoes

It’s time for another installment in my Gardening 101 series!  Now that you’ve planted your seeds and grown tomatoes, or other plants, you’re likely soon going to be drowning in fresh veggies. Don’t let those gorgeous homegrown beauties go to waste, can them!

Here is a list of all the supplies you’ll need:

Canning jars, lids, rings
Tongs for removing hot jars and lids from boiling water
Funnel for filling jars
Large Pot
Wooden Spoon
Tomato Juice
Lemon Juice

Sterilizing Your Materials

First you will want to sterilize your canning materials: canning jars, lids, rings, and make sure your tools are nice and clean. The dishwasher works well for tools such as tongs, lid magnet wand and funnel. I picked up all my tools on Amazon.

Below are some photos of the sterilization process. I followed a basic guide online, and a huge stock pot that I picked up at the grocery store, right along with the jars themselves! I filled the pot and jars with hot (not boiling) water to 1 inch above the tops of the jars. I then boiled them for 10 minutes (please note, you will need to boil for longer if you’re at higher elevations). Lastly I removed and drained the hot sterilized jars one at a time using my tongs. I also sterilized the lids and rings along with the jars.

Canning Tomatoes

Now onto the stars of the show: the tomatoes! In the same large pot, you will want to make sure the water is boiling again. Clean your tomatoes, and have them ready, keeping a strainer, tongs and a bowl of cold water and ice nearby. You will want to add the tomatoes, carefully, to the boiling water, and let them soak for under a minute, turning them around to get each side dunked.

What the boiling water will do is loosen the skin, making the tomatoes extremely easy to peel. You will not be cooking the tomatoes, just watching them carefully: once the skin starts to peel up, you want to remove them with your strainer or tongs, and dip them into the ice bath.

Keep this process going, adding a few tomatoes at a time to the boiling water, than the ice bath, and setting them on a towel or drying mat to drain. Once they are cooled, you can easily peel the skins from the tomatoes.

As you’re doing this, you will want to add some tomato juice to a pot on the stove to warm it through. This does not need to be fully cooked through, just warmed.

You will want to add as many peeled tomatoes to your jars as will fit, without really squishing them in. I added 4-5 roma tomatoes to each quart jar, but the number varied based on the size of the tomatoes themselves. If you’re using a larger or smaller jar, the number of tomatoes you can fit will vary as well.

You will then add 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to the tomatoes, and will fill the remaining space in the jar by pouring in the warm tomato juice. I used a funnel for this part, but, if you have a steady hand, you might be able to just pour! From there, you will run your wooden spoon down the side to release any air bubbles. Add your lids and lightly secure the rings.

Next you will add all of your jars back to your large pot, and cover with at least 1 inch of water. The jars will boil for another 45 minutes. This will really seal them up and sterilize the tomatoes for the long haul!

The jars will need to be lifted carefully and placed on a cutting board or right on your counter to set, usually overnight. I left the rings on my jars, but loosened them, or you can remove them. This will prevent the rings from rusting in place.

Once the jars have cooled, check the seal by pressing in the center, gently, with your finger. If the lid pops up and down, it is not sealed. These jars are fine for the fridge, and the tomatoes can be used for sauces in the next week or so. If the lid does not pop, you’re good to store in a cool dry place, like a pantry.  It is normal to see the tomatoes floating above a layer of liquid (tomatoes have a lot of water in them and it separates a bit through this process).

Feeling inquisitive? This guide has an awesome FAQ section at the bottom of the post with some great extras!!

You can use your tomatoes throughout the entire Fall, Winter and Spring, making (almost) fresh tomato sauces, or topping veggies like asparagus with tomatoes and baking. I like to mix mine in with a rice blend also, for a tomatoey risotto like option. They are tasty and healthy and delicious! Plus they’re home grown, organic and non-GMO! What more could you ask for?!

Below are two items I recommend picking up for at home canning!

Guest Post: Six Amazing Accessories to Perk Up a Stale Style

Today I have a Guest Post from a talented freelancer, Brooke Chaplan. She describes herself as “a whole bucket of awkward” but, I can assure you, her style tips are anything but!  She’s a recent college grad and loves writing, running and hiking, so clearly we have tons in common! Without further ado, here are Brooke’s tips on updating a stale style!

Updating your style with accessories is necessary when you feel your style going flat. A stale style can make you feel tired, boring, and uninspired. Luckily you can use any of the six accessories listed here to revive your style and fashion sense. These six accessories are easy to wear and can be used to your advantage in a variety of ways.

Ladies who wear belts right can bring together an outfit that would be drab in any other situation. A belt that cinches your waist in a dress will help add shape that the dress doesn’t have otherwise, and a good belt with a pair or jeans or pants will improve any outfit you choose. A shiny belt with a bit of embellishment will turn jeans and tan slacks into something that belongs on the runway.

Layering necklaces helps you create more color and interest around your face. Your necklaces may cover your chest in an open top, or use the necklaces front and center in a sweater. Choose the three or four necklaces you love to wear separately and see how they look combined.

Good shoes can pick up any tired outfit. A nice pair of wedges will dress up a skirt, and your best pumps will make your jeans look like dress pants. It’s a simple way to create a more formal look with something simple like shoes. Add a pop of color and buy a pair you don’t think will go with anything. Use them in ensembles of neutral color to bring out a fun interesting look.

Good handbags will draw attention away from casual every day outfits, and can work to create a more formal look. A good handbag could be part of your signature style, or you can alternate between many different types for an ever changing accessory piece. Good handbags will change everything about your look without a lot of expense.

Jackets And Coats
A nice jacket or coat can help make an ensemble look more formal without a huge price tag. A nice jacket will make even the most casual outfit look formal, and a lovely colored raincoat will make you look like you belong in the boardroom or on the runway. Go for buttons and cinches if you need more structure and find a good blazer that fits for an elegant piece that goes with anything.

If you wear glasses regularly or even occasionally, use your new prescription as an opportunity to find new frames. A vintage style frame can swing your entire wardrobe in a new direction. Find new pairs at your optometrists’ or search online at places like Marvel Optics, where you can find a variety of styles and have the option to order women’s glasses online.

Dress yourself up with every accessory listed here to improve a bland style. Have fun with colors, new pieces, and beautiful embellishments. Even just a few new accessories can turn an old wardrobe new again without spending all your time trying on new clothes.

3 Tips for an All Natural Garden

At our house, we have a vegetable garden, lovingly tended to by my honey. I do not have what they call a Green Thumb. He is amazing in the garden though! He inspired me to put together this post, featuring 3 tips to keep your garden all natural and pesticide free! What better way to eat organic, non-GMO, farm to table (or yard to table) foods than right from your own garden?! Here are my 3 tips!

1. Gardening with Coffee– recycle your old coffee grounds and use them as fertilizer for acid loving plants! Read all about this technique here!

2. Chemical Free Weed Killer–  Weeds in your garden got you down? Try making this environmentally safe pesticide to kill weeds popping up in pavement cracks or between paver stones. Pro tip: Spray on a hot sunny day for best results.

Combine the following  ingredients in a spray bottle:
One gallon of white vinegar
One cup of salt
One shot glass dish soap

3. Make Compost Tea– Mix equal parts compost and water and let it sit. Pour this liquid directly onto the soil around healthy, growing plants. For use on smaller seedlings, you will need to dilute this mixture by combining 4 parts water to 1 part compost. Any compost that has not gone into the solution can be used to make more tea or used in your garden. I sourced this tip here!

Do you have any great tips for an all natural garden?!

Be a Better Bridesmaid- Wedding Day Duties

Happy Wednesday lovelies!! And welcome to the next installment of my Be a Better Bridesmaid Series! On the docket for today is a list and description of your Wedding Day Duties! Without further ado, let’s get to it!

Wedding Day Duties

  • Feed and Hydrate the Bride– This one is important, that’s why it’s listed first! With the Wedding Day hustle and bustle, it’s easy for the Bride (and Bridal Party) to forget to eat and drink plenty of water! No one wants a hangry Bride, so pack snacks like granola bars, chips, pretzels and cookies for a pick me up. Toting around bottles of water and other drinks will keep the team, and most importantly the Bride, well hydrated and looking fresh for photos! Also, don’t forget to pop into Starbucks for the obligatory Bride and Bridesmaid cups!

  • Stick to the timeline– While having a relaxing and fun “getting ready” experience is key on the Wedding Day, it’s also important to stay on schedule. Remember the old “get her to the church on time” song? Well, that’s part of your job as Bridesmaid. The timeline was likely developed to make sure that all the important appointments were met: hair, makeup, limo, photos, etc. Make sure you help the Bride and rest of the Bridal Party stick to it!
  • Assist with transportation– Depending on the size of the Bridal Party and location of several key Wedding Day points, you might need to act as chauffeur for the day! If it can be avoided, the Bride shouldn’t be driving on her big day, it’s likely she’s got a million other things on her mind, and traffic laws would likely be low on the list (such is life). So make sure the Bride can easily get to and from her hair salon, makeup salon and the place where she’s getting dressed. This might also mean cleaning out the back seat to accommodate additional Bridesmaids, as parking can be limited. You will likely be traveling to the venue via limo, so reach out to the Bride in advance for the contact information and designate yourself in charge of getting picked up and transported safely!
  • Get the Bride dressed and ready– Of course, you will also need to do this, but your dress should hopefully be less complex than the Bride’s! She will need help getting into the dress, and avoiding makeup stains on the white fabric! If the dress has lots of buttons up the back, you should invest in a crochet hook to help with the button loops. I’ve linked up the one I gifted to my bestie for her Wedding Day below. It’s girly and pink of course! 😉 If possible, someone in the Bridal Party should also know exactly how to bustle the train on the dress. The Bride will need this done after the ceremony so she can dance her pants off!

Make sure you have a sewing kit on hand, which I recommend here! The train bustle could go at any moment and might need to be sewn!

  • Carry your Bridal- Be- Prepared Kit– If you don’t know what I mean, check out this post!  I list out all of the necessary items to round out a kit that keeps you prepared for anything! I used the makeup setting and refreshing spray prior to photos on the Bride and other Bridesmaids, and the additional makeup was great for touch-ups after all that dancing! One more item I would recommend is gum or mints. I always have them in my purse and they were lifesavers on my bestie’s Wedding Day! (no pun intended)

  • Assist with last minute details– Your role in the Wedding Day doesn’t stop once you’ve gotten the Bride to the ceremony venue or reception site. There will likely be a million little details that could possibly get left  out. A good rule of thumb would be to get a punch list from the Bride that morning and make sure to check in with the Wedding Coordinator or Venue Coordinator to make sure that their list matches the Bride’s. If there are opportunities for you to pitch in, do so! This will help keep the Bride calm and allow for her to focus on having the best day ever!

I hope you’ve found these tips useful! Don’t forget to pin the checklist above for later!

If you read this blog, you know I am all about trying new beauty products. I am also a huge fan of Hyaluronic Acid, specifically in serum form. I’ve tried a few of these products out, and recently got the chance to test out OZ Naturals’ Hyaluronic Acid Serum! Theirs combines the potent star ingredient with Vitamin C and Vitamin E, boosting the benefits of this serum! Read on for my review!

Here is more on the product from the OZ Naturals site:

OZ Naturals  is a leader in natural skincare. We formulate the most effective anti aging products on the market. Our products are cruelty-free, paraben free, sulfate free, mineral oil free, lanolin free and gluten free.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Professional Hydration Begins With The Highest Quality Hyaluronic Acid Serum On The Market!

OZ Naturals Hyaluronic Acid Serum deeply hydrates and plumps skin to diminish fine lines and wrinkles. Rich with antioxidant Vitamin C, this formula leaves skin soft & rejuvenated & because it’s botanically derived, it is considered to be the highest quality HA serum on the market.

The sponge-like matrix of our Hyaluronic Acid serum holds in the moisture that is responsible for plumping skin and diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. Its formula has been designed to create the perfect mix of ingredients your skin needs to achieve a youthful, lifted glow.

Above are some close ups of the product packaging- this serum comes in a clear bottle, which I like because some serums come in darker bottles, and it’s tougher to tell when you’re running low! I never like to run out of my favorite serum!

The formula is thick from the dropper, but blends easily into the skin. It feels super hydrating as soon as you put it on, but doesn’t make skin feel wet or greasy. OZ Naturals claims that the serum plumps and hydrates dry, dull skin, while assisting in balancing skin moisture levels. I struggle with super dry patches in the Winter, so I’m excited to see how this serum tackles cold weather dryness!

As far as Summer in concerned, I spend time in the sun at the beach or in the pool. I always wear sunscreen, but the salt water and sun combination can be drying for the skin. Plus I wasn’t always as diligent with the sunscreen application as I am now, so my skin could use any repair help it can get! This Hyaluronic Acid Serum speeds up skin-cell turnover, keeping new and healthy skin on the surface and diminishes surface lines and wrinkles by stimulating collagen. These are definite pluses for my skin, any extra love is greatly appreciated.

The serum is designed to work well with all skin types and can be worn under your makeup. OZ Naturals let’s its customers know that they can expect to see results upon first application, and recommends that you begin by applying the product once per day at night. After 30 days of using the product, you can increase to using the Hyaluronic Acid Serum twice per day! Lastly, OZ Naturals claims that the serum naturally lifts and firms sagging skin- as I continue to use the product I am interested to see these results!

Want to learn more from OZ Naturals? Here is some info Behind The Science:

Our HA serum deeply hydrates and plumps skin to diminish the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This potent serum delivers a surge of moisture-loving nutrients deep into the dermis of your skin. Hyaluronic Acid is known as “nature’s moisture magnet,” an ingredient that can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Also, rich with antioxidant Vitamin C, this formula leaves skin soft, smooth, and rejuvenated.

The product is 100% vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, mineral oil-free, lanolin-free, gluten-free, and GMO-free. That is an amazing roster!

It is important to note that this serum expires two years from the date of purchase. I appreciate a company being up front about the expiration date  of their product! You can’t expect it to last forever, and, trust me, you won’t have this product for that long, you’ll want to use it everyday! Plus, OZ Naturals has a 30 day, money back guarantee policy. You can contact them for a full refund,  no questions asked. Awesome!

Here are detailed directions For Use from Oz Naturals:

1. Wash and pat skin dry

3 MORE Fresh CSA Recipes

My honey and I have been having so much fun experimenting with our CSA veggie basket that we have come up with a few more recipes. Why stop at just 3? Here are 3 more fresh CSA recipes that we’ve been loving, and I think you will too!

We are new chard converts! This quiche was really simple and really delicious. My only recommendation: wash your chard really well. And when you’re done, wash it again. There were the tiniest bits of sand in my chard, even after I thought it was totally clean!

(SORTA) BLT Quiche

1 9″ store bought pie crust
1 large bunch of rainbow chard, chopped small
2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 pound bacon, cooked, drained and chopped small
1 onion, minced
4 eggs
4 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon dijon mustard
1 cup milk
1 cup shredded cheese (chef’s choice, I used Italian 5 cheese blend)
pinch nutmeg
pinch cayenne
salt & pepper to taste

1. Pre-bake pies crust according to package directions, if necessary. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a large skillet, over medium heat, drizzle in olive oil and add onions when hot. Cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
3. While this cooks, add milk, eggs, nutmeg, cayenne, mustard and salt and pepper to  a large bowl and whisk together. Add in cooked bacon and set aside.
4. Add chopped chard to skillet with onions, season with salt and pepper, cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
5. Add in cherry tomatoes and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until softened. (softness is the goal here! haha)
6. Add your chard, onion and tomato mixture to your pie crust, and top with your egg mixture. Top with cheese.
7. Bake for 35-40 minutes until custard is set. Let stand and cool for 15 minutes before enjoying!

Ready for recipe number 2?!

I posted the pic below on Instagram and had a few followers comment on the delicious looking purple veggie below! (Fruit? I have no idea) I said it was a kohlrabi, that much I did know, but I had no idea what I was going to do with it! My bestie Natalie commented letting me know that it is delicious and refreshing raw, and she eats it like an apple! I took inspiration from dear Natalie and decided to treat it like an apple or jicama, and make a delicious slaw!

Radishes are big faves in our house, and we’re growing our own jalapenos, so I decided to toss those in for a great slaw! This is perfect for chicken tacos, fish tacos or a light side dish!

Spicy Kohlrabi & Radish Slaw

1 kohlrabi
6 radishes
1 medium jalapeno
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons lemon juice
pinch of each: Cajun Seasoning, Ground Cumin, Lemon Pepper, Chipotle Seas Salt
salt & pepper to taste

1. Following Natalie’s direction, I peeled the kohlrabi like an apple. I used a sharp knife (watch your fingers!) but I think you could try a vegetable peeler. The skin is thick so you have to be careful and patient either way!
2. From there I broke out my mandolin and sliced up the kohlrabi. I didn’t realize that there was a julienne blade, and I would have used that, because I ended up cutting the thin slices into thin strips. Either way, the end goal is thin strips!
3. I used the mandolin on my radishes and left the thin slices whole, I love the look of little radish circles.
4. I used the mandolin one more time to make thin jalapeno slices, and diced them from there, again, could have used the julienne blade! One benefit of the way I did it was being able to remove a few seeds, to decrease the heat. More seeds equals more heat, so adjust as necessary for your household!
5. Add the 3 chopped ingredients to a large bowl, add in pinches of all 4 seasonings and the lemon and olive oil.
6. I used my hands to coat, and topped with plastic wrap and let sit for about an hour for the flavors to meld together!

If you haven’t used a mandolin for thin slicing and chopping, I strongly recommend it! I have a few other chopping devices, including a food processor, but the mandolin is just so classic, and the clean up is super simple! I’ve linked the one I picked up here via an Amazon Affiliate link!

For recipe number 3, make sure to follow Mar at T.O. & Fro for my Guest Post on August 3. I’ll be sharing The One Chicken Recipe Every Summer Needs! It’s made with farm fresh asparagus from our CSA and tomatoes from our garden! You’re going to love it!

Bon Apetit!
